Political Dichotomies and the Axiom of Choice
Sat. Feb 22 2020 @ 4:30 pm
All of known mathematics can be derived from a handful of simple axioms. One such axiom is the Axiom of Choice. Some bewildering paradoxes can be immediately derived from the adoption, or otherwise, of this troublesome axiom.
My thesis is that the same dichotomy between the parties which accept and do not accept this axiom is mirrored on the social/political/religious stage by the dichotomies between authoritarianism and liberalism.
Understanding the paradoxes between for instance anarchy and dictatorship or atheism and theism may help us understand, and overcome, the schisms within society which threaten to tear us apart. Led by Matt Quartermain
Harvey Greenfield is Running Late
Sat. 22nd Feb 2020 8 p.m. (1 hour)
A groundbreaking one-man piece of comedic theatre that asks a simple question: Is it possible to please everyone, all of the time? And at what cost to your family and health? In this fast and frenetic comedy, award-winning writer/performer Paul Richards explores our need to please, and why it’s sometimes healthy to, every now and then, just sit in a shed and play Subbuteo by yourself, eating biscuits and listen to Meat Loaf.
About the writer:
A comedy writer/performer based in Cambridge, Paul has written 25 shows (over a period of 12 years) that have been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. His plays have been published in the UK and Canada, and have been performed all over the world. Well, mostly the UK, the US and once in South Africa.
Kids Go Wild – Fully booked!
Sunday 23rd Feb 09.30 – 13.00
Let us never cease to stand like curious children before the great mystery into which we were born!
A free creative journey with stops for sustenance and exploration on the way! Led by Forest School leader Charlotte Allchin, who will be sharing natural materials and introducing different skills that can be used to create a keep-sake of the morning, this will be an opportunity to explore the 55 acres of beautiful woods and meadows at Braziers Park.
Adults are welcome to stay with their children and join the adventure too. If children are unaccompanied, adults need to stay on-site. They may either join in with the adult bushcraft session or the ‘Simple Printing Techniques’ at the wider community weekend in Braziers’ house, or they are welcome to just enjoy Braziers’s ambiance.
All participants please dress for the weather. This is now FULLY BOOKED.
